Structural & Decorative Design
Structural Design focuses more on more on the form and function on of a piece of furniture. Decorative Design focuses more on the ornamentation or embellishment aspect in a piece of furniture. In the photo to the right, this piece of furniture embodies the decorative design concept. |
Principles of Design
-Emphasis acts as the focal point or the center of interest in the space. The light piece is an example of emphasis as it is the focal point of this room. -Balance is the equilibrium or the arrangements of objects to reach a visual state of stability. -Proportion is is expressed through size relationships, shape, scale and form wherein the end goal is to have the items in the room pleasing to the eye. |
Elements of Design
-Pattern is an arrangement of forms or design to create a whole. In the photo to the right, the bed, wallpaper, and pillows are examples of stylized pattern. -Shape & Form refers to the shape, balance and outline of objects in a space creating unity and appealing forms. -Texture is the surface characteristics and appearance in every aspect of a space. -Line is the connection of two or more points that may vary in direction creating a pattern or a flow to the room. Examples of these are: straight, angular, or curved lines. |
Rhythms
-Rhythm by contrast is shown in the picture to the left by using a red door to compliment the green plants from outside. This creates contrast and leads the eye to the plants, then the door and finally to the green painting. -Rhythm by repetition is used simply by repeating any element of design (color, line, light, shape or form, pattern, texture etc). -Rhythm by transition helps to leads the eye in a continuous, uninterrupted flow from one area to another. |
